ARTIST STATEMENT

In 1963, after completing my degree in Art, I traveled to Italy for the first time and saw the Fra Angelico frescoes at San Marco Convent in Florence. A week later I happened into a retrospective exhibition of Giorgio Morandi. Those two artists influenced the trajectory of my work forever.

While my imagery has gone through a variety of landscape and still life inspired works, the

relationship of colors, shapes, light and texture, using Old Holland oil paint on linen, sealed with rabbit skin glue has been a lasting foundation. My recent exploration of color field painting, including graphing, has added a new excitement for me in the continual journey of reduction and simplification. The conversation between colors and sizes, as I arrange and re-arrange, while putting down layer upon layer of transparencies, creating diptychs, triptychs and multi-canvas series with unlimited possibilities.

My work has been described as meditative, serene, quiet. While that has never been my Objective, I live in the high desert, on a 3-mile dirt road, with almost no one in shouting distance. It is a dramatically harsh landscape which creates a tension between peaceful/and struggle for survival. Hopefully, its presence will be felt in the work as mystery and surprise.
